How to make your own cannabis butter in 5 easy steps
Would you like to make your own edibles sometime, but have no idea how to start? Cannabis butter is often the basis of most edible recipes. If you are able to make a proper cannabis butter, then you will already have the basic ingredient to make a space cake or a cannabis cookie.
What do you need?
In order to make cannabis butter you don’t need many ingredients. Marijuana butter consists mainly of, you probably guessed it, marijuana and butter. But in order to make cannabis butter from this, you will still need a number of items. Therefore, make sure you have at least the following supplies on-hand:
- Weed (amount as desired)
- Creamy butter (for every gram of weed, use 10 grams of butter)
- 2 pans (1 large, 1 small)
- 1 spoon
- 1 Kitchen sieve
- 1 Old tea towel
- 1 Weed grinder
Weed butter recipe
Now that you have all the ingredients and supplies in place, you’re ready to make your first own cannabis butter. Are you all set?
Step 1: Crush your weed nicely
Of course, you want all the cannabinoids (THC, CBD, etc.) to be properly absorbed by the butter. To do this, it’s important that you crush the weed well first. You do not need to grind the weed extremely fine, but make sure that no whole buds or twigs end up in the butter.
If you are using cutting waste to make your weed butter then you do not necessarily have to grind it up. Do remove the large twigs. Small twigs you can leave in place and grind finer, because they still contain a lot of THC.
Step 2: Weed au bain marie
Now that the weed is properly prepared, we can start cooking it. Fill the large pan with water and bring the water to a boil. In the other pan put the butter and the weed. To have a good ratio, it is important to weigh out the weed. To 1 gram of weed you need 10 grams of butter.
To be able to melt the butter without burning the weed, put this small pan with the ingredients in the large pan. By preparing the butter au bain marie, the temperature in the small pan will never exceed 100°C.
Step 3: Let it simmer
You will see that the butter has quickly melted and the weed is soaking into it. Let the mixture simmer for between 2 and 12 hours. How long you let the mixture simmer depends on the results you like. The longer you leave the mixture on the fire, the stronger the butter will become and the less the butter will have a cannabis flavor.
So if you don’t want your marijuana butter to taste too much like marijuana, leave it on the fire as long as possible. Then make sure to let the mixture soak as long as possible! The water does not have to rise too high, as long as it keeps boiling. Check regularly to see if there is still enough water in the large pan, because water can evaporate quickly. In addition, stir the mixture regularly with the spoon.
Step 4: Filter your liquid cannabis butter
If your cannabis mixture has been in the pan long enough, it’s time to filter it and turn it into butter. To do this, you’ll need the old tea towel, a kitchen strainer and a metal container in which the butter will eventually be stored.
Hold the strainer over the container that the butter is to end up in, and place the tea towel over the strainer. Now you can pour the pan of liquid cannabis butter over the tea towel through the sieve. The butter will now slowly drip through the tea towel and the sieve into the container. Let this stand for a while so that all the cannabis butter can end up in the container. Once most of the liquid butter has made its way into the container, you can wring out the last remaining bits of cannabis butter. Be careful, melted butter can be very hot! Therefore, use gloves if necessary.
Step 5: Allow your cannabis butter to cool
You have now separated the butter from the cannabis material and, if all goes well, you should now have a nice even liquid butter in the metal container. This means that your cannabis butter is now ready! Place the container in the refrigerator to allow the butter to firm up so that it will look like butter again. If you want to start making an edible right away that requires you to melt the butter first, now is a good time to start.
If you want to process the cannabis butter at a later date, then your cannabis butter is now completely ready and you can keep it in the fridge. Weed butter is stored in the same way as regular butter.
