THC oil is known for its high content of THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis. While many believe the oil has positive properties, scientific evidence remains limited and its long-term effects are still largely unknown.

The legality of THC oil also varies widely worldwide, with some countries allowing medicinal use and others prohibiting it. Find out about the possible effects of THC oil, and its legality within the Netherlands, here.

What is THC Oil?

THC oil, also known as tetrahydrocannabinol oil, is a concentrate of the psychoactive compound THC, derived from the cannabis plant. THC is responsible for the well-known “high” associated with cannabis use. This oil is obtained by extracting and concentrating the resinous trichomes of the cannabis plant into a liquid form.

The composition of the oil varies depending on the cannabis strain and extraction method. The oil usually contains a high concentration of THC, which can be as high as 90%. In addition, it may also contain other cannabinoids, terpenes and plant compounds. This psychoactive cannabinoid contributes to the potential therapeutic effects associated with the oil.

Unlike THC, CBD (cannabidiol) oil is another cannabis product that is becoming increasingly popular. CBD is not psychoactive and is often used for potential therapeutic purposes, such as pain relief, anti-inflammation and anxiety reduction. CBD oil contains minimal or no THC and therefore has no intoxicating effects.

The legal status and availability of the oil vary widely from country to country. In some places, recreational use of this oil is legal, while in other countries it is strictly prohibited. In the Netherlands, THC falls under the opium law and thus cannot be sold and used lightly.

What does THC oil do?

THC oil can interact with our bodies by acting on the endocannabinoid system. The oil contains a psychoactive substance called tetrahydrocannabinol, abbreviated as THC. THC is similar to the natural substances our bodies produce themselves to activate the endocannabinoid system.

But what exactly does this cannabis oil do? When we use the oil, the THC molecules bind to special places, called receptors, in our bodies. These receptors are located in different parts of our nervous system, such as the brain. When the THC molecules bind to the receptors, they can cause different effects.

Some people experience a feeling of relaxation or euphoria after using THC. Others notice psychoactive effects such as a change in perception, where things seem brighter or time seems to pass differently. In addition, THC can also affect appetite, sometimes leading to ‘binge eating’.

Although some people use THC to relieve certain symptoms, it is important to remember that it can also have side effects, such as changes in thinking and concentration, and it can be addictive if used regularly and excessively.

Health Benefits

Tetrahydrocannabinol oil can have several medicinal benefits, particularly in the areas of pain relief, anti-inflammation and improvement of symptoms in long-term conditions.

Pain relief

The active ingredients in the oil are known for its ability to reduce pain. People who suffer from chronic pain, such as back pain or arthritis, may experience relief after using THC. This is because THC can affect certain pain receptors in our bodies.

Anti-inflammation

The oil also has anti-inflammatory properties. It can help reduce inflammation in the body, which can be beneficial for people with conditions such as inflammatory diseases or joint pain.

Symptom relief

People with long-term conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS) or Crohn’s disease may benefit from THC. It can help reduce symptoms such as muscle spasms, nausea and abdominal pain.

Positive effects on mental health

There is also research on possible positive effects of THC oil on mental health. People with anxiety disorders or post-traumatic stress disorder may experience a sense of calm and contentment after using THC oil.

Risks of THC oil

The oil, however, can also carry risks. The oil contains high doses of THC which may also involve more health risks. Thus, it can cause more problems than simply smoking a joint. Temporary effects such as having trouble concentrating properly and problems with your memory may occur.

Another point to keep in mind is that THC can interact with other medications you may already be taking. This means that if you are already taking medication for another health problem, the THC you are taking may affect the effect of other medications. This can have serious consequences for your health. Therefore, it is important to discuss exactly what medications you are already taking with your doctor in order to determine the correct dosage.

Legality in the Netherlands

When it comes to THC oil, there are a number of rules of importance. You can only buy the oil from pharmacies, and that is only possible if a doctor prescribes it. Therefore, it cannot be bought in stores.

If you are not a pharmacist and you sell cannabis oil with tetrahydrocannabinol, this is illegal. If you are caught selling the oil, this is a criminal offence.

This means, in summary, using cannabis oil with THC in the Netherlands is possible. But you can only legally buy it at the pharmacy with a doctor’s prescription.
